Introduction to Agroecology
New short course dates for 2026 to be released shortly…..
Building on the success of the Introduction to Agroecology short courses we piloted last year, we shall be running additional courses this spring and summer.
The courses are designed and led by Gaina from Barleybird who is a qualified teacher and has over 10 years experience running educational activities and events on farms, in schools and community settings. She developed the Introduction to Agroecology course after observing a desire amongst non-farming members of the public for a greater understanding of UK agriculture and horticulture.
Participants discover different approaches to food production, as well as what farming can do mitigate climate change and increase biodiversity. They also learn how our individual food choices impact our soils and connect to a complex global food system. Different approaches to growing food are examined, such as permaculture, organic, biodynamic and regenerative, and compared to current industrial farming systems. We also explain the ethics, principles of agroecology and why we at Barleybird believe this approach can lead to a healthier, more equitable food system.
“It really was such a brilliant few days, I learnt LOADS! I feel it should be mandatory training for everybody - a human right to have this knowledge!”
Our previous participants included bakers, nutritionists, artists, chefs, civil servants, foresters and landscape gardeners. 100% said they would recommend the course to others, and that they would be likely to integrate their learning into their work or vocation.
There will be several courses running during spring and summer 2026, in London, Norfolk and Suffolk. Courses are open to anyone over 18, and include a mix of presentations, discussions, hands-on activities and a tour of beautiful and inspiring agroecological farms in Suffolk.
Further details, including the location, dates and cost will be announced shortly.
